From the moment the first case of HIB was identified, there was immediate suspicion that the deadly brain disease could at some point begin to be transmitted to humans. According to scientists, the disease is a “slowly looming catastrophe” and they are urging governments to prepare for its spread to humans, even though there have been no known cases of transmission yet. As an example, the researchers cite mad cow disease in the UK, which has spread rapidly from livestock to humans.
