Rumor: Hayao Miyazaki is working on a sequel to “Nausikaya of the Valley of the Wind”

It seems that the famous Japanese animator has decided to return to a familiar universe – to a world that long ago experienced a terrible global war. And the reason to think so was given by Miyazaki himself – in the recent documentary “2399 Days with Hayao Miyazaki”, he said that “it is extremely painful to return to this world”.

At the time the animator was talking about it, he was drawing Nausikaya and her “pet” Teto. Will Hayao Miyazaki’s next movie be a sequel to Nausikaya? Or is he just working on a new manga that he produced from 1982 to 1984? That’s really hard to say, considering how much the director values secrecy.

However, “The Boy and the Bird” is definitely no longer the maestro’s swan song, and the 82-year-old animator is absolutely working on a new movie. This was confirmed by Studio Ghibli Vice President Kihi Nishioka at the Toronto Film Festival.

Since his 1979 debut, “Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro,” Hayao Miyazaki has been working hard and releasing new films (albeit sometimes a decade apart) that strike poetic magic. Moreover, his latest work “The Boy and the Bird” became a commercial success: the animated film became the highest-grossing film of the director’s career in the U.S., and in Russia it is now considered the highest-grossing anime in the history of domestic distribution.
