According to the researchers, actively bicycling to work is a great way to increase or maintain physical activity levels. They pointed out that past studies have shown a reduced risk of all-cause mortality in people who ride a bike, but the impact on mental health was barely considered.
In the new paper, the experts obtained data from the National Prescription Information System (PIS), from which more than 378,000 residents of the major Scottish cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh were sampled. Their ages ranged from 16 to 74, and the ratio of men to women was roughly equal.
